Barack Obama and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand won re-election on Tuesday night, but there were other important New York City races hanging in the balance on Election Day. Here are some of the most significant winners:
-Kirsten Gillibrand won re-election to the U.S. Senate over challenger Wendy Long.
-In the 11th Congressional District, Republican Staten Island Rep. Michael Grimm beat back a strong challenge from Democrat Mark Murphy.
-Grace Meng won the 6th Congressional District's seat out of Queens, becoming the city's first Asian-American congresswoman.
-Embattled Brooklyn State assemblyman Vito Lopez, the subject of a sexual harrasment probe, cruised to re-election.
-Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries will become Rep. Jeffries of the 8th Congressional District.
